Stein and his wife Mildred bought the Vicente Martinez Adobe for $25,000 to save it from being razed and subdivided. It is now part of the John Muir National Historic Site.

Louis died on Veteran’s Day in Berkeley, California. A memorial service was held December 1st, in Kensington with over 100 attendees.
